I want to learn about the evolution of...

Welcome to Evo-Ed!

A complete understanding of evolution requires knowledge that spans many biological sub-disciplines. However, students are often only taught evolution in the context of ecological systems and isolated from genetic and cellular ones. To address this issue, we have developed interactive case studies that aim to promote integrative biological thinking. Our phenotypic evolution cases track the evolution of traits from their origination in DNA mutation, to the production of different proteins, to the fixation of alternate macroscopic phenotypes in reproductively isolated populations. Our evolutionary medicine cases focus on human diseases and disorders and highlight the importance of integrating evolutionary perspectives into human biology. Our cases include PowerPoint slides, question guides, games, and videos that are designed as teaching resources for those who wish to implement one or more of these cases into their teaching. You can navigate each page using the table of contents on the left side, and the entire site by using the links on the page header.

Phenotypic Evolution Cases

This set of cases focuses on tracking the evolution of various traits from the level of the gene all the way to populations. These cases are designed to help students learn about the various sub-disciplines of biology in an integrative manner, with an emphasis on evolution as the unifying theme of the life sciences.

Evolutionary Medicine Cases

This set of cases focus on exploring human health conditions from an interdisciplinary perspective. These cases are designed to help students understand how the various sub-disciplines of biology can be integrated to analyze a common biological system related to human health. They also emphasize how evolutionary perspectives can be applied to help us better understand human systems such as medicine.
